Laurie, considerata troppo vecchia per continuare a fare corse di velocità in mountain bike a livello agonistico, torna a Montréal e trova lavoro come pony express in bicicletta. La passione per le due ruote la porta a fare conoscenza con Lorenzo, proprietario di una bottega per ciclisti ed ex-ciclista professionista lui stesso. Tra i due si sviluppa subito un rapporto di simpatia-antipatia conciliato in una notte in cui si svolge un curioso duello su chi ha sofferto di più in sella. E alla fine scopriranno di essere simili anche nei gusti per le donne... Dalle parole della regista: "Mi piacerebbe presentare il mio film nello stesso modo in cui un fisico spiega l'universo, ad esempio con una coppia di nette formule matematiche. Scriverei: 144.000 fotogrammi, rapporto 1: 1.85, colore Rosso 33%, Blu 33%, Giallo 33%, velocità 24, e tutti sarebbero soddisfatti sui dati essenziali. Ma un film è un insieme di elementi soggettivi irrazionali, e spesso le cose esistono solo per il proprio desiderio di vederle sullo schermo. In questo caso volevo descrivere dei buffi personaggi che ho conosciuto realmente, mettere una cinepresa su una bici, parlare della paura dell'invecchiamento, del piacere della sofferenza, dell'arte di costruire le ruote, dell'effetto dell'adrenalina. Volevo parlare di luce, velocità, dell'amore a prima vista. Dello spazio e del tempo." Laurie, considered too old for mountain bike competitive racing, goes back to Montreal and starts to make a living as a bike messenger. Her passion for bikes brings her to the shop of Lorenzo, a former road cycling champion. Between the two starts a relationships of attraction and repulsion at the same time, finally reconciled by a peculiar duel about who suffered most on a saddle. And they'll discover that they even have the same taste in women... From the director: "I wish I could introduce my film in the same way that a physicist explains the universe, i.e. with a couple of clear-cut mathematical formulas. I would write: 144,000 frames, ratio 1:1.85, colour Red 33%, Blue 33%, Yellow 33%, speed 24; and everybody would be satisfied about the essentials. Yet a film is a world of irrational subjective elements, and things often exist for no other reason that one's desire to see them on screen. Here I wanted to share some funny characters I've encountered in real life, put a camera on a bike, talk about the fear of ageing, the pleasure of suffering, the art of wheelbuilding, the adrenaline effect. I wanted to talk about light, about speed, about love at first sight. About space and time." |
